A child or even a toddler is referred to us when an optometrist, school teacher or other doctors such as a paediatrician or even eye specialist if feels there might also be an eye alignment difficulty or different eye trouble that may need specialized clinical or surgical attention. The eye diseases in children have some common diseases such as
Refractive errors like myopia (Nearsightedness) hypermetropia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
Lazy Eyes (Amblyopia): Early therapy of amblyopia is necessary to a child’s vision development.
Crossed eyes or Squint (Strabismus) due to eye muscle imbalances.
Drooping eyelid or when upper eyelids slump down (Ptosis): Severe cases have the potential to block the child’s vision.
Bumpy swelling in the eyelids (Stye or chalazion).

However, children should be specially examined if they are albino (Patient with Albinism) or high concentration of oxygen during childbirth to rule out retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
During the visit, one or more of the following aspects are checked.
Visual acuity (sharpness/ glasses/ spectacle power)
Refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia)
Retina health
Eye Pressure (intraocular Pressure or pressure due to liquid inside the eyeball)
How acceptably the eyes move together/ eye muscle balance
Peripheral (side) vision
Color vision (normal or deficient or color blindness)
Need based Digital review (or computerized through high-end equipment) of the eye is done.
Some eye exams are tough or not possible to function whilst a toddler is wakeful and alert. These superior exams want to be achieved below anesthesia (Examination under Anesthesia), which means your toddler will be asleep.
